freezing your bollocks off since 2009

Jesus christ. Isn't this the tropics? I am not built for Florida's temperature extremes. No matter; a little nip off the flask and a headbutt and all is OK.

update added Friday show: Elvis Tribute!

So i've missed a couple shows recently. It's getting harder to justify updating this blag, since I have 0 feedback and my analytics show very poor readership. I have written a couple web pages to help me post flyers quicker but i'm not done with the Google Calendar aspect of it yet. Once I get around to that I may also incorporate Twitter and a user-contributed function, so people can just post shows themselves. It would be nice to know somebody would use it, however...

So. I don't know any of these bands at The Talent Farm. Let's just assume they kick ass?

Tuesday, January 5 2010
The Talent Farm (20911 Johnson St #110-111, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029) - Transit - Make Do And Mend, Go Rydell, Cool To Be You, Blank Tape, Featherweight
6:00pm, $10, all ages

Thursday comes on strong with a series of strange bands at Solid Sound Studios. Remember, kids: no moshing, no drinking, and no wild behavior. This is Punk Rock. Serious Business.

Thursday, January 7 2010
Solid Sound Studios (4616 N. Powerline Rd, Pompano Beach, FL) - To Be Hated, Break On Through, The Dead Legs, Routine Scheme, Ceasefire, Dead Bang

J & P is always a nice watering hole and easy place to sit back and listen to hardcore punk (huh?). Come check it out if you're in WPB, it's free!

J & P Sports Bar (1023 N Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach, FL) - Belt Buckle Death Sentence, Asspiss, Rad Company
8:00pm, free, 18+

A kegger *and* a fundraiser? GdeN knows how to organize the masses.

Friday, January 8 2010
GdeN House (1021 SW 5th St, Miami, FL) - Eztorbo Social, Baker Acted
8:00pm, $5, ?

I've never been to Harvey's By The Bay, but this lineup is full of bands I don't see often in Miami (aside from the obvious). Probably worth checking out.

Harvey's By The Bay (6445 Northeast 7th Avenue, Miami, FL) - To Be Hated, Andrew Sansac's Band, Dead Dead Bird, Space Between Words, White Widow
10:00pm, ?, ?

update Also on Friday is a little punk, little rockabilly, all-out fun Elvis tribute show. From a punk cover band and hellbilly group i've never seen to a newish surf-metal band, sounds like an interesting night. If you've never had a fried banana and peanut butter sandwich I highly recommend you go (or head on down to Memphis and try one!).

Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - The Gutter Queens, Gringo Starr, Rockit To Russia, Celine And The Hellbillies, The Gutter Queens
9:00pm, $5, 18+

Radio-Active is still making good on supporting local musicians by holding these great free all-ages concerts. This one's later than the usual Sunday fare, starting at 7:00pm.

Saturday, January 9 2010
Radio-Active Records (1930B E. Sunrise Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - Belt Buckle Death Sentence, Guilty Fingers, M-66

**** like no one's watching

Some day somebody's going to say "I wish we had as much Punk down here as in 2009." The sad fact is that even once-popular music will age and wither, and one day nobody will be left who has seen its origins or remembers its trials and tribulations. Dozens of bands playing shows every week will be impossible to grasp. A shirt with an unknown band's insigna will adorn a rack in a thrift store or some boxes in someone's attic. One day, today will be vintage. But not tomorrow. Not soon.

EDIT updated show info/flyer for Roger Miret & The Disasters on Thursday

Eztorbo Social have a couple new unmastered tunes on their MySpace and I recommend checking them out. I like the fact that it's nearly impossible to enjoy them in the sense of any traditional popular music... it's an assault on your ears that sounds good. Well, to me anyway =) Also, go to The Slackers on Friday and TBH's toy drive at Radio-Active Records on Saturday! Please, think of the babbies.

If you're in WPB and like punk, hardcore/thrash and metal come on out to Respectables on Wednesday.

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
Respectable Street (518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, FL) - Fall Of Olympus, Installing Chaos, To Be Hated
9pm, $5 21+/$8 under 21, 18 and up?

I still need to rustle up a flyer for this, but I found this show listing a while back and it looks pretty interesting. Hardcore, psychobilly and more? I don't understand why it was listed as 7pm yet either, that's pretty insanely early for Churchill's. EDIT Ha, I completely missed who this is! Roger Miret and Vinnie Stigma of Agnostic Front. You can buy tix from Slammie here.

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL) - Roger Miret & The Disasters, Vinnie Stigma, Mehkago N.T., Viva le Vox
7pm (yeah right), $10, 18 and up

Poorhouse may be boring now but the music sure ain't. Come have a brew and listen to some of the best hardcore punk and oi in South Florida.

Poorhouse (110 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Murderous Rampage, No Class Action, Howitzer
10pm, free, 21+

This isn't punk, again, but it is my blog and I retain the right to provide unrelated content. Specifically The Slackers playing at Churchill's on Friday night. This is kind of what I wait for every year, so please come join me and lets skank the night away. Please, PLEASE, if you come try not to act like you're too cool to dance! Yes, miami is the shizzle and all and i'm sure you have seen more impressive bands in your life. But if you like the music you don't have to be afraid to move your tuchis a little!

Friday, December 11th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - The Slackers, The Duppies, The Methodaires, Only Right Left
9pm, $10 presale $12 door, 18 and up

If you're near Pompano Beach and like really bad dive bars, come check out Belt Buckle Death Sentence and Premo vs The World at Area 7. This is a really "funny" place, but they make up for it with a $20 bottomless beer pitcher. Make sure to wink at the bartenders and maybe you can take grandma home?

Area 7 Music & Ale (3809 N Powerline Rd, Oakland Park, FL‎) - Belt Buckle Death Sentence, Premo vs. The World and the Jesus Fish Experiment
10pm, ?, 18 and up?

.... And if you're closer to Fort Lauderdale Airport, check out Angry Pudding at The Monterey Club (formerly Zoo Bar, attached to Kreepy Tiki).

The Monterey Club (2608 S. Federal Hwy, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - Angry Pudding, $3 Mess, Rock City Angels
9:30pm, $5, 18 and up?

Now here's a show to check out. Talk about variety. Punk, experimental, noize, and more... all for free, all ages and early! This show is also a toy drive, so please bring an unopened toy to help bring some joy to the kids for the holidays. Get some records while you're there and support a great local business.

Saturday, December 12th, 2009
Radio-Active Records - Mr. Entertainment & The Pookiesmackers, To Be Hated, Jolly Badfellow, Premo VS. The World, Big E & The Lazy Texans, Kenny Millions

If you're in WPB and want to help the kids, check out Angry Pudding at Respectables. It's a toy drive so try to bring one unwrapped toy to help out (it is a free show after all).

Respectable Street (518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, FL) - Angry Pudding, Rock City Angels, Big Bang Radio, The Retrocities, The Notary
8pm, free, 18 and up?

Back at Poorhouse again is a psychobilly-esque troupe The Gladezmen along with TBH. I like any time the words "live", "free" and "bar" are combined.

Saturday, December 12, 2009
Poorhouse (110 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - The Gladezmen, To Be Hated
10:30pm, free, 21+

tons of tunes to titillate tumultuous times

*edit* I just noticed this post looked like last week... updated post time. This post is for the week of October 12th, 2009.
*edit* added a last minute Toxic Thursdays show for Thursday, October 15, 2009 with lots of bands @ Pulp Live

Another jam-packed week of punk in SoFl. There's shows in Miami, Ft. Laud, West Palm and Lake Worth so no matter where you are you don't have an excuse to stay home.

Thursday's a three-fer: Teenage Bottlerocket & Cobra Skulls @ Respectables, Murder Junkies @ Churchill's and Stuck Backwards at Pulp Live. If I do venture out this week it'll be for the Murder Junkies. Or Stuck Backwards, because it isn't in Miami.

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
Pulp Live - Stuck Backwards, Break On Through, Here's To Nathan, Guilty Fingers
10pm, $4, 18 and up

Respectable Street - Teenage Bottlerocket, Cobra Skulls, The Crumbs, The Ridicules
7pm, $10, all ages

Churchill's Pub - Murder Junkies, To Be Hated, Murderous Rampage, Maruta, D.A.G., The 1%, Social Fucks
probably 9pm, $12, 18 and up

Friday is a Palm Beach day, with shows at Propaganda and Respectables.

Friday, October 16th, 2009
Respectable Street - Viva Le Vox, Black Weather Shamen
9pm, ?, ?

Propaganda - Jason and the Punknecks, To Be Hated, Installing Chaos, Angry Pudding
9pm, $5, 21 and up

On Saturday a more hillbilly/country punk show comes out at Poor House. I heard Hawg Jowls and the Bacon Fats the other day and they're really quite good at old-school country covers (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, etc).

Saturday, October 17th, 2009
Poor House - Jason and the Punknecks, Viva Le Vox, Hawg Jowls and the Bacon Fats
10pm, free, 21 and up

And Sunday is a really interesting show: standard 3-band set of acts, plus one for Punk Karaoke. The idea is that they (The Sick Boys) will have covers of over 20 songs. You sign up to be MC for one or more of them. The result is madness or genius, or both. Lots of old-school punk classics, so if you can sing every verse to every 1970's or 1980's top-o-the-punk-pops tune you'll want to be here.

Sunday, October 18th, 2009
Churchill's Pub - The Sick Boys, Brain Damage, Badass, Mehkago NT
8pm, $5, 18 and up

new potential monthly punk night, pop-punk next month

To Be Hated has a show set up at Pulp Live! for next thursday. If enough people show up it'll be incentive for the club owners to have a punk night again. PBR specials and probably the lowest door charge for any given show ($4) is not too bad, plus it's in Fort Liquordale which is rare any day for a punk show.

Next month local old-school punk The Crumbs and The Ridicules play with Teenage Bottlerocket & Cobra Skulls at Respectables. Slammie is putting this one on, and i'm not sure why since I don't see many people come out to Respectables shows unless most of the attendees were there when the bands started. Meh; the bigger the bands booked the more SoFla looks like a respectable (heh heh) place for bigger events. And bigger events means more exposure and that's not a bad thing for the tiny little scene here.

Also, the Churchill's 30th Anniversary show was much bigger than I imagined. Some very fine acts and multiple pits means it was def. an overall good time. I just couldn't quite get the feel of the night and never jumped in (but I did get a nice tap to the nads by an exhuberant young man's shoes). Oh, and thanks North Miami-Dade police for being so cool about that thing.

Also - I just found out i've been giving out the wrong address for Churchill's for years. Google maps says its '501', it's really '5501'. Sucks to get lost in Little Haiti.

Thursday, September 24th, 2009
Pulp Live (2674 East Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL‎) - Johnny Sexfuk and the Fleshrockets, To Be Hated, Enough, M-66
10pm, $4, 18 and up

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
Respectable Street (518 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, FL) - Teenage Bottlerocket, Cobra Skulls, The Crumbs, The Ridicules

More shows in Delray, West Palm Beach

This Friday, August 21st, 2009 at Dada's (52 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, FL) The Dirty Boxes and Cindy & The Heartaches play at 11PM (no cover).

Also on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009 at Respectable Street (500 Clematis St, West Palm Beach, FL) there's a block party spanning Respectables and O'Shea's Pub. Angry Pudding as well as The Freakin Hott, Viva Le Vox, Tongues of the Heartworm, and others will be playing the back patio of O'Shea's amongst other places. I don't have any more info on this, but if you're near Clematis around 8pm an open bar and free pizza sounds like a good time to me.

Did I mention they both appear to be free? Probably 18+ or 21+ each show.
