POGO & Agnostic Front

What's up kids? Long time no see. This is your uber late punk informer bringing you the scanty details on shows you probably won't go to (since you aren't reading this). However, in the spirit of promoting things I like you should probably check out POGO on Friday at Churchill's Pub. It's a night of classic hardcore punk covers by groovy local bands. Come check it out, wouldja?

Also, Agnostic Front is down yet again next month. I could swear they were just here...

Followed by Leatherface and Ninja Gun (same link above).
Indeed, even The Nekromantix will be coming to Churchill's, which is pretty cool. Buy tix here.

mon dieu! i hate blagging

So since nobody reads this thing and it actually takes time to update (and I have no internet at home) this is somewhat annoying to keep updating. For the few of you that still read this thing, or in a vein attempt to keep readers from the future with an idea of who came through town: here is your update.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

No seriously. Here you go.

Against Me! will be playing Culture Room in 2 days. Yeah I know, kinda short notice. I've known for several months and never put it on the calendar or anything. Meh. I don't know Tim Barry but it sounds like mostly just acoustic solo stuff from their myspace. Ninja Gun sounds like indie rock. I guess, go with an indie/anarchist sensibility and/or an open mind.

Thursday, February 18th, 2010
Culture Room - Against Me!, Tim Barry, Ninja Gun
7:30pm, $12-$30 (because how the fuck do you buy Culture Room tickets other than stubhub or ticketraper?), Probably All Ages

punk for hope

It seems there's been a great outpouring of support for Haiti in the wake of the recent disaster there. I know a few people who know people in Haiti, and they seem to be missing. Please help by donating via the Red Cross or visiting one of the benefit shows this and next week. If Punk music isn't your thing there are plenty of other venues with other types of music also having benefits for Hatian relief.

<rant> Also, I know this is a bit pretentious, but please try to think about all your superfluous purchases this week in the context of a person in Haiti. Take all the money you're spending on the things you don't *really* need and try to give some of it to a relief organization that can make good use of it. Whatever you spend at the bar, try to spend the same on the Red Cross or some other respectable aid organization. And of course remember that after Haiti is back on it's feet there are plenty of other people throughout the world that also need your help (including those at home). </rant>

Not North News is a new site bringing news about the Florida punk scene to Not the North. Seems interesting, hope it gets big!

Here's something I found today. Enjoy.

freezing your bollocks off since 2009

Jesus christ. Isn't this the tropics? I am not built for Florida's temperature extremes. No matter; a little nip off the flask and a headbutt and all is OK.

update added Friday show: Elvis Tribute!

So i've missed a couple shows recently. It's getting harder to justify updating this blag, since I have 0 feedback and my analytics show very poor readership. I have written a couple web pages to help me post flyers quicker but i'm not done with the Google Calendar aspect of it yet. Once I get around to that I may also incorporate Twitter and a user-contributed function, so people can just post shows themselves. It would be nice to know somebody would use it, however...

So. I don't know any of these bands at The Talent Farm. Let's just assume they kick ass?

Tuesday, January 5 2010
The Talent Farm (20911 Johnson St #110-111, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029) - Transit - Make Do And Mend, Go Rydell, Cool To Be You, Blank Tape, Featherweight

Harvey's By The Bay (6445 Northeast 7th Avenue, Miami, FL) - To Be Hated, Andrew Sansac's Band, Dead Dead Bird, Space Between Words, White Widow
10:00pm, ?, ?

update Also on Friday is a little punk, little rockabilly, all-out fun Elvis tribute show. From a punk cover band and hellbilly group i've never seen to a newish surf-metal band, sounds like an interesting night. If you've never had a fried banana and peanut butter sandwich I highly recommend you go (or head on down to Memphis and try one!).

Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - The Gutter Queens, Gringo Starr, Rockit To Russia, Celine And The Hellbillies, The Gutter Queens

merry extremely late christmas

So, I missed posting about a bunch of shows this week. (Did anyone notice?)

Today is the Julian calendar's date for the pagan winter festival of Yule. In light of this joyous occasion there has been organized a celebration, to honor gods of old with toasts and merrymaking to ensure a quick return to warmer seasons. Of course, it's fucking 80 degrees here in Florida so the gods can pretty much fuck themselves. That doesn't mean we won't party though!

Today is A Very Destroyio Christmas at Churchill's. Get your ass down here OR SANTA WILL BE ANGRY.

Friday, December 25th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Enough!, The Actuaries, Sound 4 Sound, To Be Hated, Eztorbo Social, Guerrilleros de Nadie, Baker Acted
9pm, $5, 18 and up

This one is exciting to me. I don't know any of them but Dead Meat and Jacuzzi Boys, and while Jacuzzi Boys are sort of a local favorite, I really dig Dead Meat (heh! a pun! yes, i hate me too). I highly recommend checking it out (it is not strictly punk).

Saturday, December 26 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Dead Meat, Jacuzzi Boys, Beings, Cammo, Weird Wives, Deaf Poets
9:00pm, $5, 18+

Radio-Active Records (1930B E. Sunrise Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - To Be Hated, Belt Buckle Death Sentence, Project High

This is one more of those off-the-beaten-path punk shows, with more ska/pop influences than the standard fare of street, crust or hardcore punk. Somewhat early and all ages, so come check it out if you like.

Wednesday, December 30 2009
Solid Sound Studios (4616 N. Powerline Rd, Pompano Beach, FL) - The Punktuations, The Strikeouts, The Gutter Queens, Carnivore Vs Vegan, One Way

glad i never made no damn decision

A piece in the Miami New Times interviews Fabio of Destroyio Records about the upcoming show at Churchill's. It's good to see decent local music get written up. The flier art's not bad either.

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

9pm, $5, 18 and up

Country, hillbilly, psychobilly and jangly bluegrass fills up Churchill's on Friday night. A few different people have referred me to Everymen and Black Weather Shaman. I have a serious distaste for Boise Bob's nasally monotone singing though.

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Wicked Whiskey, The Wreckenstein Brawlers, Baker Acted, Boisebob & His Backyard Band, Everymen, Black Weather Shaman
$?, $5, 18+

Some good local hardcore punk shows Miami Beach how we do on Friday at Love Hate Lounge. I've never been, but I saw a flyer posted nearby yesterday so hopefully some local traffic is drummed up too. Go check it out if you're not catching pop sensation Surfer Blood at The Vajayjaybond

Love Hate Lounge (423 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL) - Nobody's Hero, Unit Six, M-66
8pm, ?, 18 and up?

update O'Malley's hosts some more punk on Caturday with Howitzer, Nobody's Hero and some other bands i'm not familiar with. According to their Facebook page, Howitzer will not be playing this show.

Saturday, December 19th, 2009
O'Malley's Sports Bar And Grill (1388 N St Rd 7, Margate, FL) - Howitzer, Sunset City, Nobody's Hero, History of Monsters

Thank the lawd, it's Can I Say IV! The continuation of the unique microcosm of punk subculture in record collection, live music and film. Free, all-ages, downtown ft. lauderdale. Pretty cool!

**** like no one's watching

Some day somebody's going to say "I wish we had as much Punk down here as in 2009." The sad fact is that even once-popular music will age and wither, and one day nobody will be left who has seen its origins or remembers its trials and tribulations. Dozens of bands playing shows every week will be impossible to grasp. A shirt with an unknown band's insigna will adorn a rack in a thrift store or some boxes in someone's attic. One day, today will be vintage. But not tomorrow. Not soon.

EDIT updated show info/flyer for Roger Miret & The Disasters on Thursday

Eztorbo Social have a couple new unmastered tunes on their MySpace and I recommend checking them out. I like the fact that it's nearly impossible to enjoy them in the sense of any traditional popular music... it's an assault on your ears that sounds good. Well, to me anyway =) Also, go to The Slackers on Friday and TBH's toy drive at Radio-Active Records on Saturday! Please, think of the babbies.

If you're in WPB and like punk, hardcore/thrash and metal come on out to Respectables on Wednesday.

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
Respectable Street (518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, FL) - Fall Of Olympus, Installing Chaos, To Be Hated
9pm, $5 21+/$8 under 21, 18 and up?

I still need to rustle up a flyer for this, but I found this show listing a while back and it looks pretty interesting. Hardcore, psychobilly and more? I don't understand why it was listed as 7pm yet either, that's pretty insanely early for Churchill's. EDIT Ha, I completely missed who this is! Roger Miret and Vinnie Stigma of Agnostic Front. You can buy tix from Slammie here.

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL) - Roger Miret & The Disasters, Vinnie Stigma, Mehkago N.T., Viva le Vox
7pm (yeah right), $10, 18 and up

Poorhouse may be boring now but the music sure ain't. Come have a brew and listen to some of the best hardcore punk and oi in South Florida.

Poorhouse (110 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Murderous Rampage, No Class Action, Howitzer
10pm, free, 21+

This isn't punk, again, but it is my blog and I retain the right to provide unrelated content. Specifically The Slackers playing at Churchill's on Friday night. This is kind of what I wait for every year, so please come join me and lets skank the night away. Please, PLEASE, if you come try not to act like you're too cool to dance! Yes, miami is the shizzle and all and i'm sure you have seen more impressive bands in your life. But if you like the music you don't have to be afraid to move your tuchis a little!

Friday, December 11th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - The Slackers, The Duppies, The Methodaires, Only Right Left
9pm, $10 presale $12 door, 18 and up

If you're near Pompano Beach and like really bad dive bars, come check out Belt Buckle Death Sentence and Premo vs The World at Area 7. This is a really "funny" place, but they make up for it with a $20 bottomless beer pitcher. Make sure to wink at the bartenders and maybe you can take grandma home?

Area 7 Music & Ale (3809 N Powerline Rd, Oakland Park, FL‎) - Belt Buckle Death Sentence, Premo vs. The World and the Jesus Fish Experiment
10pm, ?, 18 and up?

.... And if you're closer to Fort Lauderdale Airport, check out Angry Pudding at The Monterey Club (formerly Zoo Bar, attached to Kreepy Tiki).

The Monterey Club (2608 S. Federal Hwy, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - Angry Pudding, $3 Mess, Rock City Angels
9:30pm, $5, 18 and up?

Now here's a show to check out. Talk about variety. Punk, experimental, noize, and more... all for free, all ages and early! This show is also a toy drive, so please bring an unopened toy to help bring some joy to the kids for the holidays. Get some records while you're there and support a great local business.

Saturday, December 12th, 2009
Radio-Active Records - Mr. Entertainment & The Pookiesmackers, To Be Hated, Jolly Badfellow, Premo VS. The World, Big E & The Lazy Texans, Kenny Millions
2pm, free, all ages

If you're in WPB and want to help the kids, check out Angry Pudding at Respectables. It's a toy drive so try to bring one unwrapped toy to help out (it is a free show after all).

Respectable Street (518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, FL) - Angry Pudding, Rock City Angels, Big Bang Radio, The Retrocities, The Notary
8pm, free, 18 and up?

Back at Poorhouse again is a psychobilly-esque troupe The Gladezmen along with TBH. I like any time the words "live", "free" and "bar" are combined.

Saturday, December 12, 2009
Poorhouse (110 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - The Gladezmen, To Be Hated
10:30pm, free, 21+

post-holiday wind down

There was quite some activity in the past week, what with Thanksgiving, Black Friday and a multitude of shows. Perhaps it's fitting this week seems bland and barren in comparison. After The Methodaires (when did the lead singer change?) my car decided to cook itself with a bad t-stat and sensor, so i've been MIA more than usual. I've only found one two punk shows for this week though i'm sure something is going on i'm not aware of.

The Panix finally had to cancel their record release show planned for the 5th. They didn't get the records made in time, their booking moved twice, and other unexpected complications led to the show's dissolution. But don't worry, they'll be back in '10 with merch-a-plenty (and hopefully a new tour).

Wow.. I am really slacking! I missed posting a good show at Rok Bar on the 28th. People aren't posting bulletins anymore... I need to start hunting down shows it seems. And I almost missed this: Misfits this Friday @ Culture Room, with JSF and Thrash Or Die. I'm not a big Misfits fan but this will be a show you won't come out of without multiple bruises - so i'm kinda excited.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Culture Room (3045 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Misfits, Johnny Sexfuk and the Fleshrockets, Thrash Or Die
8pm, $20, ?? (i can't see how this wouldn't be all-ages)

This show is a good one for drinking: [good] original country covers, followed by i'm not sure what, and then Oi punk. Unfortunately, if you've been to the Poorhouse lately you know it's lost all its old charm. The dirty pit of misanthropes that once was is gone. Now it's more of a brightly-lit and poorly-renovated stepchild to the monument of douchebaggery next door. But no matter, as long as they play good music and keep the pints flowin'.

Saturday, December 5th, 2009
Poorhouse (110 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Hawg Jowls & The Bacon Fats, Faux Town Fever, Howitzer
10pm, free, 21+

In the coming weeks there'll be a bunch more shows. TBH is having another free Radio-Active show and toy drive. Stay tuned or check the calendar for details.

p.s. if anyone has a show to link me to or a new band i should check out, post it in the comments! thx

better late than never!

It seems I can't seem to make enough time for this blag. I've already missed one show this week and another is today (though that too is not punk, but it's still decent). All in all there's a-plenty of shows coming up.

First up is your pre-Turkey day Ska show @ Maguire's Hill 16 in Ft. Laud. The Methodaires are a very good "original" ska troupe with a very lovely and talented singer and many talented musicians, so check them out if you've nothing else to do tonight.

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Maguires Hill 16 (535 N. Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - The Methodaires
10pm, free, 21+

Thursday Churchill's brings you a Turkey Day punk show with your favorite miamian street-punk locals. Fill your belly with tryptophan, then your ears with sweet punk rock!

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Guerrilleros de Nadie, Enough, M-66, Baker Acted, O.P.S
9pm, $5, 18+

On Friday is the return of the touring Koffin Kats as well as the Arrogant Bastards, and a slathering of more psycho/rocka-billy and punk. I still have pictures from their last showing, with the lead singer half-naked and covered in blood...

Ahh, good times =)

Friday, November 27th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - The Koffin Kats, Arrogant Bastards, The Van Orsdels, The Wreckenstein Brawlers, Riot Agents
9pm, ?, 18+

Now, I don't know much about this (yet) but there's apparently an initiative by some local Miami punk groups to try to get a DIY space together for people to work together and form more of a community. I am psyched about this! I really hope they can pull it off. Apparently they have some kind of pool tourney on Saturday but I couldn't find an address (yet), will edit when I find it.

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
miamirebirth@gmail.com - Guerrilleros de Nadie, Baker Acted, Gorilla Pussy, Eztorbo Social
?, $10, ?

Now, I don't know anything about these artists (I *really* wish I had more time to research) but in the interest of expanding musical horizons, here's a show at The Talent Farm on Sunday. I suggest doing what I should have done and look them up on MySpace and judge for yourself.

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
The Talent Farm (20911 Johnson St. #111, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029) - Soul Control, Harbinger, Centuries, Betrayed by Life
6pm, $10, ?

Another Radio-Active Matinee in Fort Lauderdale. These are great because they're early-as-hell, free and all-ages, so anyone should be able to come out and check out some good local bands. And hey, the record store is pretty pimp too! Give your local independent businesses some love huh?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
Radio-Active Records (1930B East Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304) - To Be Hated, Installing Chaos, The Strikeouts, Gutter Queens
2pm, free, all ages

And we wrap up the week with another good 'ol street/hardcore punk show at Churchill's. Sunday is always tough for a late-night punk show, but when the shows get tough, the tough buy RedBull.

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Nobody's Hero, To Be Hated, Installing Chaos, Years Ago
9pm, $5, 18+
