I don't know Tim Barry but it sounds like mostly just acoustic solo stuff from their myspace. Ninja Gun sounds like indie rock. I guess, go with an indie/anarchist sensibility and/or an open mind.

It seems there's been a great outpouring of support for Haiti in the wake of the recent disaster there. I know a few people who know people in Haiti, and they seem to be missing. Please help by donating via the Red Cross or visiting one of the benefit shows this and next week. If Punk music isn't your thing there are plenty of other venues with other types of music also having benefits for Hatian relief.

<rant> Also, I know this is a bit pretentious, but please try to think about all your superfluous purchases this week in the context of a person in Haiti. Take all the money you're spending on the things you don't *really* need and try to give some of it to a relief organization that can make good use of it. Whatever you spend at the bar, try to spend the same on the Red Cross or some other respectable aid organization. And of course remember that after Haiti is back on it's feet there are plenty of other people throughout the world that also need your help (including those at home). </rant>

So i've missed a couple shows recently. It's getting harder to justify updating this blag, since I have 0 feedback and my analytics show very poor readership. I have written a couple web pages to help me post flyers quicker but i'm not done with the Google Calendar aspect of it yet. Once I get around to that I may also incorporate Twitter and a user-contributed function, so people can just post shows themselves. It would be nice to know somebody would use it, however...

So. I don't know any of these bands at The Talent Farm. Let's just assume they kick ass?

Today is the Julian calendar's date for the pagan winter festival of Yule. In light of this joyous occasion there has been organized a celebration, to honor gods of old with toasts and merrymaking to ensure a quick return to warmer seasons. Of course, it's fucking 80 degrees here in Florida so the gods can pretty much fuck themselves. That doesn't mean we won't party though!

Some day somebody's going to say "I wish we had as much Punk down here as in 2009." The sad fact is that even once-popular music will age and wither, and one day nobody will be left who has seen its origins or remembers its trials and tribulations. Dozens of bands playing shows every week will be impossible to grasp. A shirt with an unknown band's insigna will adorn a rack in a thrift store or some boxes in someone's attic. One day, today will be vintage. But not tomorrow. Not soon.

Eztorbo Social have a couple new unmastered tunes on their MySpace and I recommend checking them out. I like the fact that it's nearly impossible to enjoy them in the sense of any traditional popular music... it's an assault on your ears that sounds good. There was quite some activity in the past week, what with Thanksgiving, Black Friday and a multitude of shows. Perhaps it's fitting this week seems bland and barren in comparison. After The Methodaires (when did the lead singer change?) my car decided to cook itself with a bad t-stat and sensor, so i've been MIA more than usual. I've only found ~~one~~ two punk shows for this week though i'm sure something is going on i'm not aware of.

The Panix finally had to cancel their record release show planned for the 5th. They didn't get the records made in time, their booking moved twice, and other unexpected complications led to the show's dissolution. But don't worry, they'll be back in '10 with merch-a-plenty (and hopefully a new tour).

Wow.. I am really slacking! I missed posting a good show at Rok Bar on the 28th. People aren't posting bulletins anymore... I need to start hunting down shows it seems. And I almost missed this: Misfits this Friday @ Culture Room, with JSF and Thrash Or Die. I'm not a big Misfits fan but this will be a show you won't come out of without multiple bruises - so i'm kinda excited.

Now it's more of a brightly-lit and poorly-renovated stepchild to the monument of douchebaggery next door. But no matter, as long as they play good music and keep the pints flowin'.

Ugh. Is it the middle of November, really? Where does the time go?

I thought this week was gonna end up being scarce, but of course myspace bulletins come through with an unending tide of shows you'll never be able to get to (considering most are on the same day). If only there was a kind of punk band union, or a regulatory committee to both keep people from booking on the same day/time and to inform and mobilize the fans and bands to see each other's shows. You might end up with people watching who aren't actually with one of the bands! (Why do people think I have musical chops? I can't even play the mouth harp. I sure work the 'ol meat organ though! Hah hah...)

The first show isn't punk at all, but I don't care; it's entertaining. The Ska Is Dead tour is rolling through to Culture Room. I'll be there to relive the 90's without the sickening feeling of nothing to do and no good music to listen to.

After that you get a big 'ol steaming pile of 3 shows on Saturday. The show in Ft. Laud with some metal/oi bands is basically a kegger, raffle and show which explains the higher than usual price. Miami is a more anarcho-friendly Firefly show with some hardcore punk and other goodness. In Margate there's an interesting medley of pop-punk, oi/hardcore and other stuff i'm not familiar with. As a general guide i'd say go to The Bubble if you like metal, The Firefly if you like strange or crusty new music, and O'Malley's for a good cross-section of modern local fairly-normal punk.

Well halloween is over. The barrage of shows gave quite a good all-around feel of good homegrown music and a fun time was had. The Gutter Queens was probably the highlight of the week (besides drunken misbehavior at Churchill's on hallow's eve; my friends and I know how to make asses out of ourselves!).

This week seems strangely calm in comparison. There was a Panix record release slated for the 5th at the Dugout, but word is it's been pushed back *again*. Will re-post if it crops up again.

Friday is something "different"... hardcore, melodic whatever, pop punk, and some other stuff at The Talent Farm. I've never really experienced these bands and they don't seem to run in the same circles as the other bands i've posted, so maybe that's a good thing? Venue is all-ages, alcohol/danger-free stuff so bring the kids. (What's with the $12 cover for a local show, guys?)

I was looking for some information about a show this Saturday, September 26th at Alligator Alley. I have a vague idea who Angry Pudding are (iirc, old school all-female punk band) but wasn't sure about Psycho Daisies. Turns out they're just about as old as Charlie Pickett & the Eggs. A very neat webpage is dedicated to chronicling some of the history of the original punk scene of South Florida, some of the bands that played down here and more. They list an old zine and a bunch of old flyers and pictures as well as a guide to collecting old Florida punk & hardcore records. I can't tell you how useful this kind of archive is to those of us who are just beginning to dive into the music of the area.

Here's the zine, Borington Journal, and here's the collector's guide. I also really like the flyers section for a peak back at what used to be current events. A sample reveals something kinda cool... is that Nobody's Heros on the cover, the same band from 1981 as is playing this Sunday at Cinema Paradiso? I think so.

Oh yeah and the Murder Junkies are coming to town. Ya know, one of several little ensembles that used to play with G. G. Allin, probably the most psychotic and insane person ever to front a national punk band. For those that don't know, Allin's on-stage "antics" make Charlie Manson look like a pussy hippie bitch. I'm sure the Murder Junkies don't include that particular aspect of the former repertoire in their modern-day sets, but if you liked the music you'll probably like this band.

This weekend is action-packed full of good shows.
Thursday is a new (hopefully recurring) Thursday night punk show @ PULP Live!.
Friday is an Oi and Hardcore show at Churchill's.
Saturday The Queers return to Respectable Street, and The Independents return to Zoo Bar.

The most productive and interesting event is this Sunday with the continuation of Can I Say, the monthly movie screening, punk show and record swap at Cinema Paradiso. I still find myself at the fringe of this collection of Old Punk's casual and experienced scenesters, or at least I assume they might have been. They're all well informed on homegrown music from a time I barely knew existed. Ah well, they sell booze at the theater so passing the time depends largely on my wallet. Parking is free on Sundays around these parts (which I am apt to forget again).

The movie this time around is "Llik Your Idols." It's about the early New York underground film scene. (Mr. Pollack, I think I am seeing the trend here) Here's a brief excerpt from a review of the film's topic:

"This arthouse-cum-grindhouse -cum-madthouse-influenced low budget Super-8 filmmaking movement was a loose coalition of lost, angry, damaged, searching, confrontational extreme artistic personalities who found themselves drawn by their personal neuroses and psychoses to the black hole of the Lower East Side during the late 70s/early 80s, during the period of time after punk had razed that city's artistic pretensions and expectations and the No Wave musical scene was enveloping New York's edge-dweller artists in its nihilistic smothering discomfort blanket."

Arguably a potential winner of run-on sentence of the month.
Don't forget that after the film there's 3 very good local Hardcore/Oi/Street Punk bands - three of my favorite local bands actually. The space and light doesn't lend itself to moshing but my mind is usually bruised enough to make up for it.

To Be Hated has a show set up at Pulp Live! for next thursday. If enough people show up it'll be incentive for the club owners to have a punk night again. PBR specials and probably the lowest door charge for any given show ($4) is not too bad, plus it's in Fort Liquordale which is rare any day for a punk show.

Next month local old-school punk The Crumbs and The Ridicules play with Teenage Bottlerocket & Cobra Skulls at Respectables. Slammie is putting this one on, and i'm not sure why since I don't see many people come out to Respectables shows unless most of the attendees were there when the bands started. Meh; the bigger the bands booked the more SoFla looks like a respectable (heh heh) place for bigger events. And bigger events means more exposure and that's not a bad thing for the tiny little scene here.

Also, the Churchill's 30th Anniversary show was much bigger than I imagined. Some very fine acts and multiple pits means it was def. an overall good time. I just couldn't quite get the feel of the night and never jumped in (but I did get a nice tap to the nads by an exhuberant young man's shoes). Oh, and thanks North Miami-Dade police for being so cool about that thing.

Also - I just found out i've been giving out the wrong address for Churchill's for years. Google maps says its '501', it's really '5501'. Sucks to get lost in Little Haiti.

This month The Queers come to Revolution with some decent local bands. All ages for a big-name band so that's cool.

In November there's another show at Churchill's featuring acts from all over florida from different varieties (including Punk). At Culture Room a ska tour will roll in on the 19th with such names as The Toasters, Mustard Plug and Voodoo Glow Skulls.

Well I tell you, a pair of passenger airliners could hit some major financial center killing thousands of people and i'd be the last one to know.

Reverend Horton Heat plays next Monday with Johnny Sexfuk and The Fleshrockets. Don't have much details on this one... it's also kinda funny that neither Motorhead nor Nashville Pussy will be playing with the Rev, but Johnny ain't bad at all (just not very Country). The tickets are $9 right now at ticketmaster so if you want to go, get on it! UPDATE Truckstop Coffee is also playing. A brief story about the show is here.

Churchill's Pub won a lame poll for best Miami music venue, between Jazid and them on NBC Miami's website. Honestly, the two clubs couldn't be much more different if one was a shithole dive and the other was a trendy salsa spot. Oh, wait...

The Miami Herald ran a story about their 30th anniversary. The best and worst reason to come to Churchill's to play is still "there's no other place to play." The sound system sucks, but you couldn't find a more down-to-earth bunch of people.

To Be Hated is getting with PULP Live! [the old metal factory] to organize a monthly punk rock night. If it lasts it's a very cool idea, since anyone can remember "hey, isn't it the end of the month? let's go see a punk show" vs trying to keep up-to-date through fliers and word of mouth (which is what this blag is trying to fix). Big ups to them for supporting the local punk scene.

Of course they and literally a dozen other bands will be playing Churchill's this Saturday for Churchill's 30th Anniversary show. It starts at 8pm sharp - but this time they mean it cuz there's fuckin' 16 bands on the bill.

Finally, the main reason for this post: Battalion of Saints in November!!!
Yep, the old-school hardcore punk from way out west is coming to Miami for 1 show - *in all of florida*. Why? I have no idea. But they're only here once so let's give 'em a warm welcome. The Angst are coming down, so should you.

Looks like this Sunday is a mixed bunch of art and bands as part of a Ghettofest, some sort of half-baked mini-festival in dirty ol' miami. Next friday is another show based on local miami street punk as well as Ass Piss, a great hardcore/street punk band from Lake Worth. I like these shows because they're very "by us, for us" and a good example of how people just like making and watching music with their friends without the trappings of a bar or drunken scene.

This Friday, August 21st, 2009 at Dada's (52 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, FL) The Dirty Boxes and Cindy & The Heartaches play at 11PM (no cover).

Also on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009 at Respectable Street (500 Clematis St, West Palm Beach, FL) there's a block party spanning Respectables and O'Shea's Pub. Angry Pudding as well as The Freakin Hott, Viva Le Vox, Tongues of the Heartworm, and others will be playing the back patio of O'Shea's amongst other places. I don't have any more info on this, but if you're near Clematis around 8pm an open bar and free pizza sounds like a good time to me.

Did I mention they both appear to be free? Probably 18+ or 21+ each show.

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009: No Class Action plays with The Shakers down at O'Malley's Sports Bar (1388 N State Road 7, Margate, FL‎) around 8PM. This little bar has a lot of room, and good cheese fries.

They're also playing with Howitzer at Churchill's a day before my birthday. What a nice present! I can get hammered and listen to two of my favorite south florida punk bands in one of my favorite dives. (They should really have shows at Green Briar, imho)
