It's a night of classic hardcore punk covers by groovy local bands. Come check it out, wouldja?

Also, Agnostic Front is down yet again next month. I know a few people who know people in Haiti, and they seem to be missing. Please help by donating via the Red Cross or visiting one of the benefit shows this and next week. If Punk music isn't your thing there are plenty of other venues with other types of music also having benefits for Hatian relief.

<rant> Also, I know this is a bit pretentious, but please try to think about all your superfluous purchases this week in the context of a person in Haiti. Take all the money you're spending on the things you don't *really* need and try to give some of it to a relief organization that can make good use of it. Whatever you spend at the bar, try to spend the same on the Red Cross or some other respectable aid organization. And of course remember that after Haiti is back on it's feet there are plenty of other people throughout the world that also need your help (including those at home). </rant>

Not North News is a new site bringing news about the Florida punk scene to Not the North. It's getting harder to justify updating this blag, since I have 0 feedback and my analytics show very poor readership. I have written a couple web pages to help me post flyers quicker but i'm not done with the Google Calendar aspect of it yet. Once I get around to that I may also incorporate Twitter and a user-contributed function, so people can just post shows themselves. It would be nice to know somebody would use it, however...

So. I don't know any of these bands at The Talent Farm. Let's just assume they kick ass?

Tuesday, January 5 2010
The Talent Farm (20911 Johnson St #110-111, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029) - Transit - Make Do And Mend, Go Rydell, Cool To Be You, Blank Tape, Featherweight
6:00pm, $10, all ages

Thursday comes on strong with a series of strange bands at Solid Sound Studios. (Did anyone notice?)

Today is the Julian calendar's date for the pagan winter festival of Yule. In light of this joyous occasion there has been organized a celebration, to honor gods of old with toasts and merrymaking to ensure a quick return to warmer seasons. Of course, it's fucking 80 degrees here in Florida so the gods can pretty much fuck themselves. That doesn't mean we won't party though!

Today is A Very Destroyio Christmas at Churchill's. Get your ass down here OR SANTA WILL BE ANGRY.

Friday, December 25th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Enough!, The Actuaries, Sound 4 Sound, To Be Hated, Eztorbo Social, Guerrilleros de Nadie, Baker Acted
9pm, $5, 18 and up

This one is exciting to me. I don't know any of them but Dead Meat and Jacuzzi Boys, and while Jacuzzi Boys are sort of a local favorite, I really dig Dead Meat (heh! a pun! yes, i hate me too). I highly recommend checking it out (it is not strictly punk).

Saturday, December 26 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Dead Meat, Jacuzzi Boys, Beings, Cammo, Weird Wives, Deaf Poets
9:00pm, $5, 18+

Another Sunday Matinee comin' your way thanks to Radio-Active Records and Bermuda Triangle Productions. Belt Buckle Death Sentence is a pretty good young hardcore punk band, so come check em out. (Attn kids: free, all ages, etc)

Sunday, December 27 2009
Radio-Active Records (1930B E. Sunrise Blvd, Ft. Somewhat early and all ages, so come check it out if you like.

Wednesday, December 30 2009
Solid Sound Studios (4616 N. The sad fact is that even once-popular music will age and wither, and one day nobody will be left who has seen its origins or remembers its trials and tribulations. Dozens of bands playing shows every week will be impossible to grasp. A shirt with an unknown band's insigna will adorn a rack in a thrift store or some boxes in someone's attic. One day, today will be vintage. But not tomorrow. Not soon.

EDIT updated show info/flyer for Roger Miret & The Disasters on Thursday

Eztorbo Social have a couple new unmastered tunes on their MySpace and I recommend checking them out. I like the fact that it's nearly impossible to enjoy them in the sense of any traditional popular music... it's an assault on your ears that sounds good. Well, to me anyway =) Also, go to The Slackers on Friday and TBH's toy drive at Radio-Active Records on Saturday! Please, think of the babbies.

If you're in WPB and like punk, hardcore/thrash and metal come on out to Respectables on Wednesday.

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
Respectable Street (518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, FL) - Fall Of Olympus, Installing Chaos, To Be Hated
9pm, $5 21+/$8 under 21, 18 and up?

I still need to rustle up a flyer for this, but I found this show listing a while back and it looks pretty interesting. Hardcore, psychobilly and more? I don't understand why it was listed as 7pm yet either, that's pretty insanely early for Churchill's. EDIT Ha, I completely missed who this is! Roger Miret and Vinnie Stigma of Agnostic Front. You can buy tix from Slammie here.

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL) - Roger Miret & The Disasters, Vinnie Stigma, Mehkago N.T., Viva le Vox
7pm (yeah right), $10, 18 and up

Poorhouse may be boring now but the music sure ain't. Specifically The Slackers playing at Churchill's on Friday night. This is kind of what I wait for every year, so please come join me and lets skank the night away. Please, PLEASE, if you come try not to act like you're too cool to dance! Yes, miami is the shizzle and all and i'm sure you have seen more impressive bands in your life. But if you like the music you don't have to be afraid to move your tuchis a little!

Friday, December 11th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - The Slackers, The Duppies, The Methodaires, Only Right Left
9pm, $10 presale $12 door, 18 and up

If you're near Pompano Beach and like really bad dive bars, come check out Belt Buckle Death Sentence and Premo vs The World at Area 7. This is a really "funny" place, but they make up for it with a $20 bottomless beer pitcher. Make sure to wink at the bartenders and maybe you can take grandma home?

Area 7 Music & Ale (3809 N Powerline Rd, Oakland Park, FL‎) - Belt Buckle Death Sentence, Premo vs. The World and the Jesus Fish Experiment
10pm, ?, 18 and up?

.... And if you're closer to Fort Lauderdale Airport, check out Angry Pudding at The Monterey Club (formerly Zoo Bar, attached to Kreepy Tiki).

The Monterey Club (2608 S. Talk about variety. Punk, experimental, noize, and more... all for free, all ages and early! Get some records while you're there and support a great local business.

Saturday, December 12th, 2009
Radio-Active Records - Mr. Entertainment & The Pookiesmackers, To Be Hated, Jolly Badfellow, Premo VS. Perhaps it's fitting this week seems bland and barren in comparison. After The Methodaires (when did the lead singer change?) my car decided to cook itself with a bad t-stat and sensor, so i've been MIA more than usual. I've only found <s>one</s> two punk shows for this week though i'm sure something is going on i'm not aware of.

The Panix finally had to cancel their record release show planned for the 5th. They didn't get the records made in time, their booking moved twice, and other unexpected complications led to the show's dissolution. But don't worry, they'll be back in '10 with merch-a-plenty (and hopefully a new tour).

Wow.. I am really slacking! I missed posting a good show at Rok Bar on the 28th. People aren't posting bulletins anymore... I need to start hunting down shows it seems. And I almost missed this: Misfits this Friday @ Culture Room, with JSF and Thrash Or Die. I'm not a big Misfits fan but this will be a show you won't come out of without multiple bruises - so i'm kinda excited.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Culture Room (3045 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Misfits, Johnny Sexfuk and the Fleshrockets, Thrash Or Die
8pm, $20, ?? (i can't see how this wouldn't be all-ages)

This show is a good one for drinking: [good] original country covers, followed by i'm not sure what, and then Oi punk. Unfortunately, if you've been to the Poorhouse lately you know it's lost all its old charm. The dirty pit of misanthropes that once was is gone. Now it's more of a brightly-lit and poorly-renovated stepchild to the monument of douchebaggery next door. But no matter, as long as they play good music and keep the pints flowin'.

Saturday, December 5th, 2009
Poorhouse (110 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Hawg Jowls & The Bacon Fats, Faux Town Fever, Howitzer
10pm, free, 21+

In the coming weeks there'll be a bunch more shows. TBH is having another free Radio-Active show and toy drive. Stay tuned or check the calendar for details.

p.s. if anyone has a show to link me to or a new band i should check out, post it in the comments! thx

better late than never!

It seems I can't seem to make enough time for this blag. The Methodaires are a very good "original" ska troupe with a very lovely and talented singer and many talented musicians, so check them out if you've nothing else to do tonight.

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Maguires Hill 16 (535 N. I am psyched about this! I really hope they can pull it off. Apparently they have some kind of pool tourney on Saturday but I couldn't find an address (yet), will edit when I find it.

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
miamirebirth@gmail.com - Guerrilleros de Nadie, Baker Acted, Gorilla Pussy, Eztorbo Social
?, $10, ?

Now, I don't know anything about these artists (I *really* wish I had more time to research) but in the interest of expanding musical horizons, here's a show at The Talent Farm on Sunday. I suggest doing what I should have done and look them up on MySpace and judge for yourself.

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
The Talent Farm (20911 Johnson St. #111, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029) - Soul Control, Harbinger, Centuries, Betrayed by Life
6pm, $10, ?

Another Radio-Active Matinee in Fort Lauderdale. These are great because they're early-as-hell, free and all-ages, so anyone should be able to come out and check out some good local bands. And hey, the record store is pretty pimp too! Give your local independent businesses some love huh?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
Radio-Active Records (1930B East Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304) - To Be Hated, Installing Chaos, The Strikeouts, Gutter Queens
2pm, free, all ages

And we wrap up the week with another good 'ol street/hardcore punk show at Churchill's. Sunday is always tough for a late-night punk show, but when the shows get tough, the tough buy RedBull.

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
Churchill's Pub (5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL) - Nobody's Hero, To Be Hated, Installing Chaos, Years Ago
9pm, $5, 18+

rudie can't fail

Ugh. Is it the middle of November, really? Where does the time go?

I thought this week was gonna end up being scarce, but of course myspace bulletins come through with an unending tide of shows you'll never be able to get to (considering most are on the same day). If only there was a kind of punk band union, or a regulatory committee to both keep people from booking on the same day/time and to inform and mobilize the fans and bands to see each other's shows. You might end up with people watching who aren't actually with one of the bands! (Why do people think I have musical chops? I can't even play the mouth harp. I sure work the 'ol meat organ though! Hah hah...)

The first show isn't punk at all, but I don't care; it's entertaining. The Ska Is Dead tour is rolling through to Culture Room. I'll be there to relive the 90's without the sickening feeling of nothing to do and no good music to listen to.

Thursday, November 19th, 2009
Culture Room - The Toasters, Mustard Plug, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Deal's Gone Bad
7:30pm, $15 (yeah right thanks ticketmaster, unless you wanna be there at 6 and get a leftover ticket), all ages

The next is a free show at the old Zoo Bar/Kreepy Tiki Lounge, now The Monterey Club. Fruitiest name i've ever heard for a punk venue. Some very decent bands so check it out if you're north of US-1 and I-595 on Friday night. (There is no room to mosh but please don't let that stop you from trying!)

Friday, November 20th, 2009
The Monterey Club (2608 S Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Consular, To Be Hated, Johnny Sexfuk & The Fleshrockets, The Actuaries
10pm, free, 21 to drink any age if you dont go to the bar

After that you get a big 'ol steaming pile of 3 shows on Saturday. The show in Ft. Laud with some metal/oi bands is basically a kegger, raffle and show which explains the higher than usual price. Miami is a more anarcho-friendly Firefly show with some hardcore punk and other goodness. In Margate there's an interesting medley of pop-punk, oi/hardcore and other stuff i'm not familiar with. As a general guide i'd say go to The Bubble if you like metal, The Firefly if you like strange or crusty new music, and O'Malley's for a good cross-section of modern local fairly-normal punk.

Saturday, November 21st, 2009
The Bubble (810 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Murderous Rampage, Howitzer, Edge of Anger
7pm, $15, 21 and up

The Firefly (219 NE 20th St, Miami, FL) - Crow's Foot, Eztorbo Social, Sloane Peterson
7pm, $5, all ages

O'Malley's (1388 N State Rd 7, Margate, FL) - Break On Through, A New Start, The Sex Prophets, No Class Action
9pm, free, 21 and up

I'm not sure what's going on with Churchill's or Toxic Thursday but i'll update if I find something out. The barrage of shows gave quite a good all-around feel of good homegrown music and a fun time was had. The Gutter Queens was probably the highlight of the week (besides drunken misbehavior at Churchill's on hallow's eve; my friends and I know how to make asses out of ourselves!).

This week seems strangely calm in comparison. There was a Panix record release slated for the 5th at the Dugout, but word is it's been pushed back *again*. Will re-post if it crops up again.

Friday is something "different"... hardcore, melodic whatever, pop punk, and some other stuff at The Talent Farm. I've never really experienced these bands and they don't seem to run in the same circles as the other bands i've posted, so maybe that's a good thing? Venue is all-ages, alcohol/danger-free stuff so bring the kids. I heard Hawg Jowls and the Bacon Fats the other day and they're really quite good at old-school country covers (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, etc).

Saturday, October 17th, 2009
Poor House - Jason and the Punknecks, Viva Le Vox, Hawg Jowls and the Bacon Fats
10pm, free, 21 and up

And Sunday is a really interesting show: standard 3-band set of acts, plus one for Punk Karaoke. The idea is that they (The Sick Boys) will have covers of over 20 songs. You sign up to be MC for one or more of them. The result is madness or genius, or both. Lots of old-school punk classics, so if you can sing every verse to every 1970's or 1980's top-o-the-punk-pops tune you'll want to be here.

Sunday, October 18th, 2009
Churchill's Pub - The Sick Boys, Brain Damage, Badass, Mehkago NT
8pm, $5, 18 and up

a flurry of fresh fodder for fascinated freaks to flog

This update brought to you by People Who Stay Up Too Late Watching Movies And Getting Fat. Don't do today what you can put off 'til tomorrow!

This Thursday is the continuation of Toxic Thursdays @ PULP Live! in Fort Laudamurderdale (yes, some people actually call it that). To Be Hated and Tim of The Ruins have gotten together to form Bermuda Triangle Productions, and they've brought together Jolly Badfellow, Tonight We Kill and The Actuaries for this week (on short notice!). Remember, at $4 cover and $2 pbr's it's pretty inexpensive, and the Broward location will save gas money too.

Thursday, October 8th, 2009
PULP Live - Jolly Badfellow, Tonight We Kill, The Actuaries
10pm, $4, 18 and up

Mark Pollack's last big hurrah for a while: Rock VS Mark. There is no such thing as 'tuning' anymore, aside from the radio and when was the last time you 'tuned in' a radio station? You just go to the number or hit your pre-set button. I suppose it would make more sense to just put them down in the calendar and blog about them a week or two before they come up. Eventually i'd like to make it so people can simply click through a bunch of metadata (venues within a certain area, artist/band names, times, ages, whatever) and find the shows they want to go to.

Until then i'll just stick to the recent calendar bit. Check the calendar to the left of the blog for dates this weekend - there's a lot. Here's some more:

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
Propaganda - Murderous Rampage, Tongues of the Heartworm, Lazerbeast, Thunderbeast
8pm, ?, ?

Official afterparty for the Queers/Leftovers:

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
One For The Road (3613 S. Military Trail, Lake Worth, FL) - Oma's Zwerge, Routine Scheme, Jolly Badfellow, Lights Out
11pm, ?, ?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009
Propaganda - Black Weather Shaman, Kill Now?!, BBDS
8pm, free, ?

Damn, I really need to automate this.
So anyway, all told there's 9 shows this weekend starting Thursday and ending Sunday. Holy fuck. You really cannot say punk or a particular music scene is dead when nine fucking shows happen in one weekend. I'm going to continue bragging about its significance to me for a while but i'll probably only catch one of them. I have a vague idea who Angry Pudding are (iirc, old school all-female punk band) but wasn't sure about Psycho Daisies. Turns out they're just about as old as Charlie Pickett & the Eggs. A very neat webpage is dedicated to chronicling some of the history of the original punk scene of South Florida, some of the bands that played down here and more. They list an old zine and a bunch of old flyers and pictures as well as a guide to collecting old Florida punk & hardcore records. I can't tell you how useful this kind of archive is to those of us who are just beginning to dive into the music of the area.

Here's the zine, Borington Journal, and here's the collector's guide. I also really like the flyers section for a peak back at what used to be current events. A sample reveals something kinda cool... is that Nobody's Heros on the cover, the same band from 1981 as is playing this Sunday at Cinema Paradiso? I think so.

Oh yeah and the Murder Junkies are coming to town. Ya know, one of several little ensembles that used to play with G. G. Allin, probably the most psychotic and insane person ever to front a national punk band. For those that don't know, Allin's on-stage "antics" make Charlie Manson look like a pussy hippie bitch. I'm sure the Murder Junkies don't include that particular aspect of the former repertoire in their modern-day sets, but if you liked the music you'll probably like this band.

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
Churchill's Pub - The Murder Junkies, To Be Hated, Maruta, D.A.G., The 1%, Social Fucks
9pm, $12, 18 and up

tons-o-punk this weekend, new event next month

This weekend is action-packed full of good shows.
Thursday is a new (hopefully recurring) Thursday night punk show @ PULP Live!.
Friday is an Oi and Hardcore show at Churchill's.
Saturday The Queers return to Respectable Street, and The Independents return to Zoo Bar.

The most productive and interesting event is this Sunday with the continuation of Can I Say, the monthly movie screening, punk show and record swap at Cinema Paradiso. I still find myself at the fringe of this collection of Old Punk's casual and experienced scenesters, or at least I assume they might have been. They're all well informed on homegrown music from a time I barely knew existed. Ah well, they sell booze at the theater so passing the time depends largely on my wallet. Parking is free on Sundays around these parts (which I am apt to forget again).

The movie this time around is "Llik Your Idols." It's about the early New York underground film scene. (Mr. Pollack, I think I am seeing the trend here) Here's a brief excerpt from a review of the film's topic:

"This arthouse-cum-grindhouse -cum-madthouse-influenced low budget Super-8 filmmaking movement was a loose coalition of lost, angry, damaged, searching, confrontational extreme artistic personalities who found themselves drawn by their personal neuroses and psychoses to the black hole of the Lower East Side during the late 70s/early 80s, during the period of time after punk had razed that city's artistic pretensions and expectations and the No Wave musical scene was enveloping New York's edge-dweller artists in its nihilistic smothering discomfort blanket."

Arguably a potential winner of run-on sentence of the month.
Don't forget that after the film there's 3 very good local Hardcore/Oi/Street Punk bands - three of my favorite local bands actually. The space and light doesn't lend itself to moshing but my mind is usually bruised enough to make up for it.

Sunday, September 27th, 2009
Cinema Paradiso - No Class Action, Howitzer, Nobodys Hero
music at 8pm and movie at 9pm, free, all ages

Also next month is another punk show (keep 'em coming!) at the relatively new Propaganda in Lake Worth.

Friday, October 16, 2009
Propaganda - Jason and The Punknecks, Morgan Knockers, To Be Hated, Angry Pudding
9pm, $5, 21 and up

*UPDATE*

I thought he was coming but I wasn't sure... but sure enough, Thursday the 24th the evil motherfucker from tennessee is back! If enough people show up it'll be incentive for the club owners to have a punk night again. PBR specials and probably the lowest door charge for any given show ($4) is not too bad, plus it's in Fort Liquordale which is rare any day for a punk show.

Next month local old-school punk The Crumbs and The Ridicules play with Teenage Bottlerocket & Cobra Skulls at Respectables. Slammie is putting this one on, and i'm not sure why since I don't see many people come out to Respectables shows unless most of the attendees were there when the bands started. Meh; the bigger the bands booked the more SoFla looks like a respectable (heh heh) place for bigger events. And bigger events means more exposure and that's not a bad thing for the tiny little scene here.

Also, the Churchill's 30th Anniversary show was much bigger than I imagined. Some very fine acts and multiple pits means it was def. an overall good time. I just couldn't quite get the feel of the night and never jumped in (but I did get a nice tap to the nads by an exhuberant young man's shoes). Oh, and thanks North Miami-Dade police for being so cool about that thing.

Also - I just found out i've been giving out the wrong address for Churchill's for years. Google maps says its '501', it's really '5501'. Sucks to get lost in Little Haiti.

Thursday, September 24th, 2009
Pulp Live (2674 East Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL‎) - Johnny Sexfuk and the Fleshrockets, To Be Hated, Enough, M-66
10pm, $4, 18 and up

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
Respectable Street (518 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, FL) - Teenage Bottlerocket, Cobra Skulls, The Crumbs, The Ridicules
7pm, $10, all ages

queers this month, misfits and others next month

This month The Queers come to Revolution with some decent local bands. Don't have much details on this one... it's also kinda funny that neither Motorhead nor Nashville Pussy will be playing with the Rev, but Johnny ain't bad at all (just not very Country). The tickets are $9 right now at ticketmaster so if you want to go, get on it! UPDATE Truckstop Coffee is also playing. Honestly, the two clubs couldn't be much more different if one was a shithole dive and the other was a trendy salsa spot. Oh, wait...

The Miami Herald ran a story about their 30th anniversary. The best and worst reason to come to Churchill's to play is still "there's no other place to play." The sound system sucks, but you couldn't find a more down-to-earth bunch of people.

To Be Hated is getting with PULP Live! [the old metal factory] to organize a monthly punk rock night. If it lasts it's a very cool idea, since anyone can remember "hey, isn't it the end of the month? let's go see a punk show" vs trying to keep up-to-date through fliers and word of mouth (which is what this blag is trying to fix). Big ups to them for supporting the local punk scene.

Of course they and literally a dozen other bands will be playing Churchill's this Saturday for Churchill's 30th Anniversary show. It starts at 8pm sharp - but this time they mean it cuz there's fuckin' 16 bands on the bill.

Finally, the main reason for this post: Battalion of Saints in November!!!
Yep, the old-school hardcore punk from way out west is coming to Miami for 1 show - *in all of florida*. Why? I have no idea. But they're only here once so let's give 'em a warm welcome.
